The Boys of Flanders: Letters from the Western Front

Coming Soon.

Hugh Gordon Munro and Arthur Melville Munro, brothers from Oakville, Ontario, enlisted in World War I straight out of high school, joining their friend George Brock Chisholm. From 1915 to 1918, the three regularly exchanged letters with family and friends, sharing vivid accounts of their experiences, from the monotony of trench life to the intensity of battles like Ypres, Vimy Ridge, and The Somme.

This book, based on over 200 letters and photographs donated by Lynne Munro (Melville’s daughter-in-law) to the Oakville Historical Society, blends personal correspondence with war diaries and regimental histories. Some letters are reproduced as written, while others are woven into a broader narrative that traces the boys’ journey from enlistment through deployment and combat. The book captures their humanity, highlighting friendships, mundane daily routines, and the fleeting joys of brief respites from the front lines.
